Sources & methodology

SCB is the only data provider. Calculations made on this site are explained below.

Real amounts are expressed in 2025 prices using CPI. The year in the tooltip identifies the observation, not the price reference year.

Gross monthly wages, adjusted to full-time: all sectors, all occupations, both sexes. SCB produces these statistics on behalf of the Swedish National Mediation Office (Medlingsinstitutet). National means and medians are taken directly; subgroup medians are never averaged. Mean wages are available from 1991 and median wages from 1992. The median for 1991 is missing, including its inflation-adjusted value. For 1991–2003 we use table TAB3841, selecting all education levels and both sexes. We then use TAB2557 for 2004–2013, TAB4272 for 2014–2022 and TAB5709 from 2023. Age coverage expanded from 18–64 to 18–66 in 2014 and to 18–68 in 2023. Changes in composition and sampling affect comparability. Net wages are not included.

Real amount in year t = nominal amount in year t × annual average CPI in the reference year / annual average CPI in year t. CPI comes from TAB4352 (1980=100); the reference year can be selected independently of the chart period. CPI adjustment measures purchasing power against consumer prices, not the volume of public services. No extrapolation beyond source coverage is performed.

Every chart starts with SCB data. Years, units and calculations stay visible throughout. Changes over time do not, by themselves, establish the effects of a particular policy.

SCB table notes

For employees in municipalities and county councils The occupational variable SSYK is connected from an AID Label-code. 2018, updates have been made in the AID code, which has led to certain changes among SSYK groups. Therefore, comparisons using SSYK before and after 2018 must be done with caution when looking at municipalities and county councils and also the public sector and entire labour market, especially occupations that are common in municipalities and county councils.

Comparisons between different years should be made with caution. Factors that complicate such comparisons, for example, the private sector survey, the degree of non-response, change and improvement in the classification of variables. From the year 2008 SSYK is derived from a new occupational classification in municipalities and county councils which has led to some change in SSYK.

SCB table notes

From 2014 onwards, the age group 65–66 is also included in the survey.

From 2014 onwards, staff categories private sector (manual or non-manual workers) are classified from the occupational code of the employees. This means that all occupational groups now are either manual workers or non-manual workers. This results in major structural changes. Comparisons with previous years should be made with considerable caution.
